Renee Mitchell

Artist bio

Self-taught artist, Renee Mitchells finely-honed line work reference a detailed knowledge of the animal world. Her connection with the essence of the creatures she so intimately portrays (fur babies and spirit animals) is palpable and indeed the creatures appear paused to move off the page. A passion for pens and love of freedom and movement can be seen in Mitchell’s largest body of works. In her Scratch Series animals and sea creatures alike show fine detail and lose line working together in harmony to bring animals to life. A portion of these works combine pen with acrylic paint offering a mixed media contemporary take on the traditional portrait.

I create art because...

I have to. With so many artworks inside my head, it is imperative I get them onto the canvas or page!

I am different to most artists because...

I am not sure I am that different to other artists. I can say that though I am always bursting to create. My style is relatively unique, though I do teach workshops and therefore the style is gaining some traction in Australia. I have found since starting that there are many internationally working in a similar format. Also, I understand that my art is not for everyone. But it connects with some.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

A sense of freedom and movement. And hopefully a connection with the subject.

The thing I most want to say to non-artists is...

Enjoy. You don't have to be a creator to create a beautiful, moving space in your home or office.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

No matter if you are creating or collecting, art is a form or self expression.

Bring this collection to your space.
