Kate Murdoch

Artist bio

Kate Murdoch is a botanical abstract artist based in Melbourne Australia and her work distills the essence of organic form. She received a BFA from Monash University, has exhibited across Australia and internationally and has been a finalist in numerous prize shows. Kate’s practice has long been a means of connecting to herself through the symmetry and beauty of nature. She is interested in how life comes into being through order and disorder and her current work explores how biocosmology relates to the natural world. Recently, she completed a residency at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Skopelos, Greece. Her latest solo series was shown at fortyfivedownstairs in September 2026. Her work is in collections in Australia and the UK.

I create art because...

I create art because it puts me into a calm and beautiful meditative zone that I don't feel with anything else. I also love to make pieces that I can either place in my own home or that can bring joy to others in theirs. Added to this is the challenge of creating paintings that are full of energy and colour.

When you look at my art, the thing I want you to feel is...

Calm but also stimulated. I would like the viewer to see different things each time they look at the work.

I believe art is an important part of our lives because...

Art is an important part of our lives because more than ever, the world needs art in all its forms. We need to see ourselves mirrored, to be grounded by truth, beauty and the deep love existing in art.
